Abstract title: Vertical Discrepancies: Recognition and Management in the Growing Child from a Neuro-Occlusal and Postural Perspective

Abstract:Vertical discrepancies in the growing child represent a significant clinical challenge in pediatric dentistry and orthodontics, as they may interfere with craniofacial development, oral function, and overall postural balance. Early recognition and appropriate management are essential to guide harmonious growth and to prevent the progression of skeletal and functional imbalances.

This presentation aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the diagnosis and management of vertical discrepancies during growth, including open bite, deep bite, and altered vertical facial patterns. Emphasis will be placed on early clinical signs, functional assessment, and the importance of interdisciplinary diagnosis. The role of oral functions—such as breathing, swallowing, and mastication—will be discussed as key factors influencing vertical development.

From the perspective of Neuro-Occlusal Rehabilitation and posturology, the lecture will highlight how occlusal balance, neuromuscular function, and body posture are closely interconnected. Treatment protocols adapted to the stage of dental development will be discussed. In children with primary dentition, management is based on direct occlusal tracks (direct composite bite planes) and myofunctional trainers aimed at restoring functional balance and guiding neuromuscular adaptation. In patients in mixed dentition, invisible aligners are used as an interceptive orthodontic tool to control vertical dimension, improve occlusal relationships, and promote harmonious craniofacial growth, while maintaining comfort and compliance.
Clinical cases will be presented to illustrate minimally invasive, growth-oriented therapeutic strategies that integrate occlusal, neuromuscular, and postural considerations. The lecture highlights the key role of the pediatric dentist and orthodontist in early intervention, emphasizing functional equilibrium, facial harmony, and long-term stability in growing patients.
