| Abstract: Non-nutritive sucking habits such as thumb sucking and pacifier use are common in early childhood and frequently encountered in pediatric dental practice. This 45-minute lecture provides a clinically focused, evidence-based overview of sucking habits in toddlers, addressing when these behaviors are self-limiting and when they warrant professional intervention. Emphasis is placed on psychosocial factors, potential effects on occlusion and oral structures, and age-appropriate management strategies. Practical clinical guidance, case examples, and counseling approaches are presented to help pediatric dentists advise families confidently, avoid premature intervention, and identify situations that truly require treatment. |
