Abstract: Craniofacial Development as a Framework for Early Orthodontic Decision-Making Understanding craniofacial growth and development is fundamental to the rationale and timing of early orthodontic intervention. This presentation will review key patterns of craniofacial growth, including sagittal, transverse, and vertical dimensions, with emphasis on variability in growth trajectories and the limitations of chronological age as a predictor of treatment timing. The biological principles underpinning growth modification will be discussed, including the distinction between dentoalveolar adaptation and true skeletal change. Building on this foundation, the lecture will introduce a clinically oriented framework for early orthodontic decision-making, integrating growth patterns, patient-specific factors, and treatment objectives. Particular attention will be given to identifying which patients truly benefit from early intervention, when treatment is indicated, and how modality selection can be aligned with underlying growth dynamics. Within this context, selected applications in the management of maxillary deficiency both sagittal and transverse will be explored to illustrate how growth-based principles can be translated into effective clinical strategies. The aim is to provide clinicians with a structured, evidence-informed approach to early orthodontic treatment that balances biological understanding with practical decision-making.
