| Title: Airway-Focused Orthodontics: The Role of Early Intervention in Sleep Disordered Breathing: What is the Evidence? Abstract: Disordered breathing and airway are of tremendous importance and interest to oral health care providers. The topic is complex as normal breathing with etiologies ranging from nasal obstruction to pharyngeal neuropathy, macroglossia, bulbar manifestations, low lung volumes that can all contribute to airway obstruction. There is evidence that airway obstruction due to adenotonsillar hypertrophy can be associated with higher prevalence of Class II and III malocclusions, open bite, and a narrower maxillary arch width. Does early intervention help establish a healthier airway with the outcome of reduction obstructive airway events and improving oxygen intake? This presentation will review evidence surrounding early intervention and sleep disordered breathing outcomes. |
