Abstract: Behavioral factors are central to effective pediatric orthodontic treatment. For instance, a range of behavioral factors influence patient cooperation, treatment adherence, treatment outcomes, and overall health and well-being. To provide the best possible care, clinicians should understand contemporary behavioral considerations and apply relevant strategies. This presentation will introduce attendees to foundational concepts in developmental psychology, pediatric mental health, dental fear and anxiety, and health behavior as related to the practice of orthodontics. Key background and clinical strategies for communication, behavior guidance, and working with parents and caregivers will be reviewed. Interprofessional considerations will also be discussed.
