PROF. NORMAN TINANOFF

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Norman Tinanoff received his dental degree from the University of Maryland in 1971.  After receiving his certificate and Master’s Degree in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Iowa, he spent another year at the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City in a research fellowship.  He became Board Certified in Pediatric Dentistry in 1983. For 23 years he was at the University of Connecticut Health Center where he was director of the Pediatric Dentistry graduate program for 16 years.  From 1999 to 2016 he was Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and the Department of Health Promotion and Policy at the University of Maryland.  He received the title of Professor Emeritus in 2024. Dr. Tinanoff has authored or co-authored over 230 publications, primarily on fluoride mechanisms, antimicrobials, caries risk factors, early childhood caries and prevention.  He also has served as the Science Chair for the first (Bangkok) and second (Rome) IAPD Summits.
